Food Services Meats
How are meats, fats and bones recycled?
Quest Recycling offers a nationwide program to collect, and recycle, meat that is about a week before the sell by date from grocery stores and restaurants. The program stores the meat in refrigerated containers and sends it to either feed animals (such as at local zoos or kennels) or to meat-rendering processing facilities where it is processed into one of the following categories:
- Protein Meals - Primarily used in animal feeds, protein meals are made up of meat and bone meals, poultry meals and premium meat and bone meal for aquaculture.
- Feeding Fats - Made up of saturated fats, action fat and Linolic 20
- Tallow - Fatty acids necessary for the production of cosmetics, plastics, organic detergents, and other consumer products, tallow is derived from animal tallow as well as the ingredients needed for many soaps and lubricants
